PS3 Warhawk – Game Director Tells the Whole Story

The reasons why Sony went multiplayer on it, why they made it a downloadable title and so on

The real story behind Warhawk
and its not doing so good as a single-player game, but more as a downloadable multiplayer title for the PlayStation 3, is told by development team director Dylan Jobe in an interview with 1UP. He tries to defend as much as he can both Warhawk’s image and SCEA’s, admitting that the team had to juggle with resources in order to make the most out of Warhawk, to keep fans interested. He also admits that Sony positioned the game as a downloadable one, because it presents less risk:

“I would agree. I mean, speaking hypothetically, I think there’s a much bigger opportunity - it’s more than just high quality titles. With digital distribution, you’ve got arcade ports and stuff like that - but there’s no reason why it can’t be more HBO-esque in terms of high quality titles. I think there’s a stigma out there. Think about it this way: iTunes is very convenient. But just because iTunes is available now doesn’t mean that music producers say ‘oh, now we can do crummy music.’ Convenience is great, but quality always wins out. Good music sells whether it’s on iTunes or whatever else.”

Even if the game proved to be very PS3 worthy, the single-player just didn’t look as good as everyone hoped. The developing team felt that they simply had to pull it out of the mud as soon as possible and emphasized its multiplayer features more. “Quite honestly, if we were to continue down our single-player/multiplayer approach, it would have resulted in not as good single player or not as good multiplayer,” said Jobe. “Because it’s a matter of juggling resources and attention and polish and all of that. It was definitely a painful decision for me.”

So there you go. As much as you’d like to hate Sony and everyone working on the game for not doing a perfect job with Warhawk, they did the best they could with the available resources for this title. Who knows, maybe a multiplayer only and downloadable via PlayStation Network Warhawk is the answer to all their trouble.
