Want Matchmaking in Unreal Tournament 2007?
Then tell Epic. Or don’t. But they’re considering it.
If Battlefield has taught us anything, developing a proper server browser isn’t easy — or maybe DICE just sucks at it. Anyway, Halo 2’s pairings based on skill makes the process incredibly easy. Just some friends, set a few variables for match type and a minute or two later you’re firing away. Turns out Epic Games thinks that might work for Unreal Tournament 2007, too.
Voodoo Extreme picked up on Epic Games lead programmer Steve Polge asking for feedback on the idea from Unreal Tournament fans. With the game still some months off, gamers can still influence how the game comes out. Here’s what Polge’s suggesting:
“We want stats and player ranking to be a more important part of the next UT. Particularly, we want to be able to use player ranking to help players find servers which match their skill level, to avoid the issues with wide skill disparities you often see in UT2K4 pub servers. However, it’s easy to game the rankings if you control the server.”
If they don’t go with this system, will Epic incorporate a server browser into the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 (which isn’t officially announced yet, but c’mon) versions of the game? Doesn’t seem likely, so we’d wager this becomes part of the PC version, albeit potentially optional, one way or the other.
