I got the Sony PSP Slim and Lite console late last year so here is my review on it.

What I liked

Firstly, the console itself looks very nice. As stated in it’s name, it is actually slim and relatively light and is very ergonomic. Some handheld console cause you pain or discomfort after holding them for long periods of the time and the PSP does not do this. You can play it for several hours without feeling like you have done so.

The use of the console is also reasonably creative though there appeared to be nothing that different from other consoles. Games like Locoroco use the PSP widescreen system well, allowing you to interact and  enjoy the game better.

The graphics are also pretty good on the console, achieving at the very minimum a similar look to the PS2 console, which definitely isn’t too shabby considering this is a handheld console. The built in Wi-Fi and other features such as Video and Music Player are also good and allow you to use features such as the UMD discs that are available to purchase with the console. If you’re going to download media then you can also use this on the PSP by using the cable provided.

What I didn’t like

Some of the ‘extras’ that you need to allow to PSP to reach it’s full potential are expensive. The memory cards can set you back a small fortune if you want to get a decent one which can be a pain as you will want to get one for your save games etc.

Another couple of issues come in the form of game problems and functionality. A lot of the games have excessive load times so you can be stuck waiting for the next part of the level for a long while. It’s pretty annoying if you are in the mood for gaming, to have to wait for half a minute every time you want to carry on with your gaming experience! The multimedia functionality is also not always the best and can cause problems especially with things like downloaded videos. These can sometimes cause the videos not to work meaning a lot of wasted time downloading them and moving them across to your PSP. The actual file transfer can also be slow which adds to the annoyance of the file not working. Having said that, they do work the majority of the time but it would be nice if the codecs were pre-installed on the console.
Another note is the lack of decent games for the console. It would have been nice to have a better selection to choose from.

Marks
7/10 – A good console but it does feel like some things could definitely be improved.
