So weird it’s true — and playing won’t cost a dime.

There are enough fantasy MMOs released and in-development, but if the online marketplace really wants to expand, studios need to start tinkering with other genres. Shiny Entertainment founder Dave Perry has been working with the “new” Acclaim recently, and his latest effort involves him directing game development on DANCE!, a massively multiplayer online dancing game. Yeah, weird.

We don’t know how the gameplay will exactly work, though assuming a riff off Konami’s Dance Dance Revolution series is a safe bet. And instead of copping out with generic techno tracks, Acclaim seems to be promising licensed, popular and culturally relevant music for DANCE!, with the website’s FAQ asking for user feedback on what songs to include down the line.

There’s no release date for DANCE! Yet, but players can participate in the upcoming beta test simply by signing up on the official website. Even if you don’t touch the beta, though, trying out the finished product pinch the wallet, either, as Acclaim’s offering the game for free, instead relying on in-game advertising and players purchasing new clothing options for their avatars.

Acclaim’s press release focuses on the aesthetic aspects of the player’s appearance in DANCE!, promising players will have a chance to create their own unique dancer through variable styles, facial features, clothing and accessories. It’s certainly an interesting approach to a game type that’s found difficulty moving outside the hack ‘n flash of orcs and elves.
