Rise to the challenge of growing up with Fable 2

Peter Molyneux did a wonderful job at hyping up the original Fable, so good that many eventually got disappointed by the final version. This doesn’t make Fable a lesser game in any way though, and with the second installment under development at Lionhead Studios, time has come again for Molyneux to reveal some of the gritty details of his upcoming work. We find out more via 1UP.

Fable 2 promises a fully interactive world where players can willingly affect the environment. Should you take a small encampment ten years from now, it will become a thriving village, but if you decide to kill of its inhabitants, returning in 10
years will only bring you to the edge of a not so exciting forest.

Because your character actually grows up while questing, you’ll be able to court members of the opposite sex and get married. Depending on whether you have protected or unprotected sex, you might have a child, notoriously visible should you be playing a female character, on account of her belly. Molyneux depicts one particularly interesting fast forwarded moment: “If you went out on a quest and came back and a period of time had passed, the doors of your house would burst open and your child would run out and greet you. Your kid always loves whether you’re good or evil.”

With wife and child, you clearly need a home. Characters proficient in the acquisition of wealth can actually buy more than weapons and armor, like real estate. Every single building, castle, catacomb or hut is available for purchase, locations that will, in turn, unlock additional content.

There’s one Fable trick that didn’t make it in the new installment as the new game takes into consideration positional combat through the geometry of the surrounding areas. Whenever you swing a sword, the character’s motion interacts and recognizes the environment. Yet, the flagship feature that will set Fable 2 apart from all existing games is yet to be revealed, as Molyneux said it was so crazy that his team couldn’t believe he wanted to include it. Truth or hype, according to Molyneux, we might find out during a March 2007 showing.
