To celebrate the upcoming launch of Final Fantasy XII, a title expected to be the most commercially successful in PlayStation 2 history, on March 16th, Square-Enix and Sony are pairing up to release a deluxe FFXII PS2 system.

The console itself is the normal black slimline PS2 that’s been out for quite some time now, but this time around it’s decorated with the emblem of the Judge Master from FFXII. The system comes with the game (obviously) in a snazzy looking box that collectors (and eBay opportunists) around the world will want to have stacked on their shelves. Also included is a PS2 stand and, because it’s a Japanese bundle, a special FFXII phone strap.
The deluxe set will be released in Japan on March 16th for an “open price” according to Square Enix. What an “open price” means is that there is no MSRP so stores can feel free to sell it at whatever price they set (Sony/Square-Enix will still sell it at a certain price to all the retailers, but at that point they can choose their own profit levels). This is kind of an odd thing that doesn’t really happen that much in Japan (or the U.S., for that matter, especially with hardware), so it’ll be interesting to see what type of gouged prices the set ends up going for this spring.
Price aside, it’s just over three months until the most awaited Final Fantasy yet arrives in Japan. Stay tuned to 1UP for more FFXII news as the release date approaches.
