What Is Steam Cloud and How Does It Work?
Reinstalling a game and finding your save still waiting is one of Steam’s quietest conveniences. That’s Steam Cloud at work. It keeps your progress safe and available across devices, but it has limits most players don’t know about. Here’s how it works.
What Steam Cloud Does
Steam Cloud automatically uploads certain game files to Valve’s servers. These usually include save files and settings. When you launch the game on another PC, or reinstall it, Steam downloads them again. You pick up exactly where you stopped.
It Isn’t Automatic for Every Game
This is the part most people miss. Developers decide whether their game uses Steam Cloud, and which files it uploads. Some games sync everything. Some sync only settings. While some don’t support it at all. You can check a game’s store page for Steam Cloud support before you buy.
How to Check That It’s Turned On
Two switches control Steam Cloud, and both must be on.
- The global setting. Open Steam Settings, go to the Cloud tab, and tick the option to enable Steam Cloud sync for supported applications.
- The per-game setting. Right-click the game, open Properties, and check that cloud synchronisation is enabled on the General tab.
If either switch is off, your saves stay on your PC and won’t upload.
Where Your Saves Live Locally
On a default Windows install, Steam keeps local cloud saves in the Steam userdata folder, inside folders named after your Steam ID and the game’s ID. The game decides the file names and structure inside. Some games also keep extra saves in other locations, like Documents.
What Is a Cloud Conflict?
Sometimes you’ll see a message saying your local files and cloud files are out of sync. This isn’t a bug. It means Steam found two different versions of your save and can’t tell which one you want.
You’ll usually get two choices:
- Upload to the Steam Cloud. This keeps your local save and overwrites the cloud copy.
- Download from the Steam Cloud. This keeps the cloud copy and overwrites your local save.
Don’t click either one quickly. Choosing wrongly can erase progress.
Why Conflicts Happen
- You played offline. The cloud never received your newest progress.
- You closed Steam mid-upload. The sync didn’t finish.
- You play on more than one device. This is the most common cause, including on Steam Deck.
- Your account is active on another machine. Steam blocks syncing to stop two devices overwriting each other.
How to Fix a Conflict Safely
- Back up first. Copy the local save folder somewhere safe before you decide.
- Check the timestamps. Choose the copy that’s most recent and most complete.
- Close Steam on other devices. Then try again.
- Use Retry Sync. If the Library shows “Out of Sync” next to the Play button, click the cloud status and retry before launching.
- Toggle it off and on. Turning cloud sync off in Settings, waiting a few seconds, and switching it back on can reset a stuck sync.
Steam Cloud Is Not a Full Backup
This matters. Steam Cloud is a sync service, not a guaranteed backup. If a bad save is uploaded, the bad version syncs too. Games also have storage limits for cloud files. For saves you’d hate to lose, keep your own copy now and then.
Using It Across Multiple PCs
Steam Cloud works best when you follow a few habits.
- Let it finish. Wait for the upload to complete before you shut down.
- Don’t run the same game on two PCs at once. This causes most conflicts.
- Stay online when possible. Offline play is the main reason progress gets out of sync.
- Check for the download bar. If you launch a game on a second PC and never see it pull from the cloud, stop and check before you play.
The Bottom Line
Steam Cloud quietly protects your progress and moves it between devices. But it only works for games that support it, and both switches must be on. When a conflict appears, slow down, back up your saves, and choose the newest copy on purpose. Do that, and you’ll rarely lose anything.
FAQs
Does every Steam game support Steam Cloud?
No. Each developer decides, so check the store page for Steam Cloud support.
How do I turn Steam Cloud on?
Enable it in Steam Settings under Cloud, then confirm the per-game setting in the game’s Properties.
What does a Steam Cloud conflict mean?
Your local save and the cloud save are different, and Steam can’t tell which one you want to keep.
Is Steam Cloud a backup of my saves?
Not exactly. It syncs your files, so a bad save can sync too. Keep a manual backup of saves you care about.
Will I lose my save if I uninstall a game?
Not if Steam Cloud is on and the game supports it. Your progress should download again when you reinstall.
