New policy puts repairs for launch machines on the house.

Whether due to Dead Rising or not, many 360 owners out there have experienced the dreaded “red ring of death” that signals the demise of their console, and while any new console launch comes with its fair share of shoddy hardware, the fail rate seemed a wee touch on the high side.

When Microsoft noticed a “higher number than usual” of repairs coming in, they investigated, and discovered that the vast majority of the broken units came from the initial manufacturing run of the console. So much for buying early, huh?

Well, don’t feel stupid for waiting in line at Best Buy for 17 hours just to get your 360 at launch, because Microsoft is going to make it all up to you. As Gamerscore Blog explains, Microsoft is picking up the tab for all out-of-warranty repairs for busted units in the U.S. and Canada that were purchased before January 1, 2006.

They’re even going to refund the few folks who’ve already shelled out the cash for the repairs. Sweet!
